Process Physiotherapy
Process Physiotherapy is a premier physiotherapy center located in Preston, offering specialized care tailored specifically for climbers and outdoor athletes. Led by Andy, a physiotherapist with over 30 years of climbing experience and nearly two decades as a coach, the practice bridges the gap between clinical treatment and the unique physical demands of the sport. Unlike traditional clinics that may suggest prolonged rest, Process Physiotherapy focuses on active rehabilitation, helping you maintain your fitness and confidence while recovering from injury.
The center provides a comprehensive range of services, including remote physiotherapy, in-person assessments, and performance testing. Treatments cover injury prevention, movement analysis, and mid-to-late stage rehabilitation for conditions such as flexor pulley injuries, synovitis, and overuse injuries. Clients can choose from various service levels, including detailed Process Assessments, Upper Body MOTs, and specialized Climbing Movement and Falling Assessments. The team is also available at multiple locations, including Lancaster Wall, Boulder UK in Preston, and The Big Depot in South Manchester, with recent expansions to Eden Rock in Carlisle through affiliated specialist Tom Schofield.
Beyond clinical services, Process Physiotherapy is dedicated to empowering climbers through education and specialized equipment. The practice offers resources such as "The Self-Rehabbed Climber" book and e-book, as well as proprietary training tools like the Unlevel Edge and Flexor Pulley Splints. These products are designed to optimize finger recruitment, reduce injury risk, and enhance rehab outcomes using sustainable, UK-sourced materials. Whether you are looking to return to the crag after an injury, improve your performance through screening, or simply train smarter, Process Physiotherapy provides the expertise and support needed to keep you climbing pain-free.

Fantastic experience: Ive been working with Andy for a few months now with an ongoing tenosynovitis injury, as well as a shoulder injury and his service and expertise have been brilliant. My finger is now in the best place it has been in 8 months! Andy is really attentive and seems to genuinely care about you as an individual. He has given me the confidence and reassurance to see the light at end of the rehab tunnel. The rehab provided has been extremely easy to follow and any questions have been responded to swiftly and professionally. And all of this has been achieved through remote appointments! I genuinely couldn't ask for more! I would highly recommend his services to anyone who happens to fall into an injury. Don't self rehab! Go see this dude! Thanks for all your continued help Andy.
Fantastic experience: Excellent service from Andy! I’m a fell runner and rock climber and needed some urgent attention and advice with a heavily twisted and swollen ankle. Andy saw me the following day, went through a full assessment, numerous tests, and exercises to get me ready for a trip out to the Alps. Now heading out to Slovenia a couple of weeks later with a much better ankle and ability to walk. Can’t rate Andy highly enough. Top stuff!
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review Graham. Much appreciated. Enjoy your time in Slovenia.
Fantastic experience: Andy was great. Did an online consult and his follow ups were really helpful and guided me through recovering from my finger injury. Good job!
Thanks Jaspal. It's very kind of you to leave a review. I hope you're crushing!
Fantastic experience: Andy is a leading expert in the field. Having conversations with top researchers and curating the literature to apply in the easiest possible way with his patients. I would take his advice on anything from nutrition to finger training. Practically, he's fully guided me from a complete A4 pulley rupture to full strength in significantly less time than it's taken me (self-guided) to recover some previous pulley strains. With a single fun conversation! Guided me through the whole process with plenty of adaptations and new exercises. Can't thank you enough Andy!
Wow thanks David. What an amazing thing to say. Thankyou.
I’m really happy you’re back at full strength.
Fantastic experience: I found Andy from his excellent book on climbing injuries and came to him following an A2 pulley sprain whilst on holiday. His approach to rehab is both holistic and sympathetic giving me confidence to not be afraid of the injury and how to progress with confidence throughout the process. Following the first video consult, he was always happy to reply to any queries I had and adapt my rehab accordingly. This was so important and different from any other physio I’d seen who you’d have to wait to ask at the next consultation; Andy encourages you to keep in touch and all for that first consultation fee. Honestly the best physio I’ve consulted and would throughly recommend him to anyone!
Thanks for taking the time to write that lovely review Matt. I look forward to following your ongoing adventures and I’m sure I’ll see you at a crag soon.
Fantastic experience: Had a really great experience. Top knowledge and experience, even knew the route and hold I'd injured myself on! I had a remote session regarding a finger injury and would highly recommend to anyone else in a similar circumstance.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review Rob. Much appreciated and I'm really pleased you've been so happy with the service you've received.
Fantastic experience: TL;DR: I've had the absolute pleasure of working with Andy twice now and, I think, the best review I can come up with is this: If you're ever in need of a physiotherapist, I truly hope you're fortunate enough to find your way to him! (Now for the long, rambling part) Andy has been able to diagnose (and rehab!) what no other physio I've seen could. And he's kept me climbing throughout the whole process!! With the amount of knowledge this guy has, I'm amazed his head hasn't exploded! All exercises I've been given have been easy to follow, with clear instructions (and videos!), and continued support to adjust and progress as needed. The main thing, for me, is how attentive he is. Andy will make you feel seen and listened to. He's patient, kind, and seems genuinely interested in you as a climber and a person. It's rare to find someone who looks at the bigger picture, but Andy really does, and he's been a great help to me in several areas. I really can't praise or recommend him enough, but the next time I do something silly and end up injured (as I'm sure I will!) Andy will be my first choice. I hope he will be yours too!
Such a kind thing to say, thankyou. It's made me smile on a Monday morning and I really appreciate you taking the time to leave it.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant and effective service. Andy helped me when I strained some muscles in my arm last year. He went through in detail to help me understand the injury and helped me to quickly recover. I have since used his book "The self rehabbed climber" to work through some minor niggles on my own. Would 100% recommend using Process Physio.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review Kyle. It's much appreciated. I'm glad you've found the book useful,
Fantastic experience: Superb. Throughout the whole process of booking, diagnosis, an initial treatment plan and follow up communication/ appointments Andy has been spot on. Highly recommended.
Thanks Alan. You’ve made use of the offer of regular communication and that is what makes the difference.
Thanks again.
Fantastic experience: For 8 months I've been playing with how to correctly rehab my trigger finger, It's pushed me back so many times I couldn't count. Andy is absolutely superb, he patiently listens to all of the silly stories, asking lots of questions throughout before finally diagnosing in a way that anyone would be able to understand. Now he has written me a plan of action, with the things to avoid and the things I should continue to do - climbing! You expect after seeing a physio that they'll tell you to rest, it feels like that is the LAST aid for recovery in Andy's eyes, he's eager to get me to climb, but teaches a safe way of doing so. If you're wondering whether to self-diagnose, or get a professionals help, I'm sure with Andy to prod in the right direction I would of been climbing properly about 6 months ago... Absolutely brilliant, calm and knowledgeable guy, I couldn't recommend enough!
Wow! Thanks. I’m delighted you’ve felt so happy. I’m just finishing for a long weekend and that’s really got me off to a great start. Thanks.
Fantastic experience: Andy is a great physio who has a holistic approach. His wealth of knowledge and expertise makes you feel in good hands as well as having a kind nature with a genuine desire to help. Would highly recommend especially if you’re a climber with specific injuries. He’ll give you clear and realistic exercises and activities with videos and theory to help with your understanding of the issues. I’ve been doing mine for several months and feeling great benefit. Thanks Andy :)
Thanks Stef. Very kind of you to such a positive review. Onwards and upwards!
Fantastic experience: Start to finish physiotherapy. Excellent knowledge of the tolls climbing can take on the body and exactly how to fix them. I continued climbing throughout my rehabilitation and was supported every step of the way. A truly unique physio with a tool box of tricks for seemingly any injury
Thanks Andy that means a lot.
Fantastic experience: Andy at Process Physiotherapy has helped me through several injuries now. He has helped me to rehab whilst still continuing my sport, and fitting in a busy life. He supports you throughout your recovery with a start to finish service. I would say his broad knowledge of climbing related injuries is second to none.
High praise indeed. Thanks Jo.
Fantastic experience: Andy has helped both me and my wife recover from climbing related injuries. He is a super nice guy, and goes above and beyond. He also gives you the training plan in the format that is easiest for you (for us was by email) whereas other physio's I've had don't want to send you anything in writing but have made me make notes. It seems Andy really does want the best for his clients. Cheers Andy!
I’d like to think that you having the info you need for your rehab would be the basic minimum! But thanks for your very kind review. Much appreciated.
Fantastic experience: Super impressed from my first session with Andy. I tracked him down as an elbow trouble specialist, and was not disappointed. Super detailed knowledge, great treatment plan and pointers in the gym on how to implement correctly, and then he followed up with an amazing document to make sure I had everything I needed.
Thanks Phil. It's nice to hear you've appreciated the service. Speak soon.
Fantastic experience: Very knowledgeable and passionate about helping climbers.
Thanks Rachel. I'm glad my passion shows :)
Fantastic experience: Andy is very personable and knows his stuff. He is able to explain what's wrong and he gives clear advice to help injuries repair and follows up every time to check on progress. I've seen Andy once in person and several times online and every appointment has helped.
Thanks Louise. That was lovely to read.
I hope the elbow has settled!
Fantastic experience: Andy has helped with various niggles from climbing. He's very knowledgeable as well as friendly and approachable. I would highly recommend!!
Thanks Lizzy. You were a star patient who did as they were asked!
Fantastic experience: I need to be the starting point of this review if Andy! I have had an ongoing elbow problem for more than 20 years. It's come and gone periodically. The other thing about me which is relevant is that I am very good at following rehab protocols but have limited sticking power! Whilst my problem is not resolved I am totally happy with the help Andy has given in the past year. He clearly knows his physiology but combines that with an understanding of the pressures and expectations of clients. His holistic approach to rehab is worth a read especially in combination with a consultation or two. By any standards this would be excellent value.
Thanks Justin. Very kind words.
Fantastic experience: From climbing together I already knew Andy to be meticulous, safe and knowledgeable. He is also a very nice and down to earth person. Having had a remote session with him reference very debilitating back pain I now know that he's transferred all these assets to his physiotherapy practice. Although I only met online it felt thorough and his findings have been echoed by the physiotherapist I've subsequently seen in my country of residence and got me started on my road to recovery a week earlier than if I'd simply waited for my local service. And instead of dragging my feet to the local clinic I already had some of the spring restored to my step. Highly recommended!
Thanks JJ. You’re a pleasure to work with!
Fantastic experience: Super nice guy. Seemed to understand and explain the injuries to me and provide positive progressions to recovery. The interim email communication is great, to answer any questions along the way.
Thanks Josh. Kind words and reviews like this really matter to a business like mine.
Fantastic experience: Andy has been helping me with a finger and a shoulder injury. Everything had been done remotely, with very responsive email follow up in between. I have seen a huge improvement in my finger, and have decided to tackle my long standing shoulder injury now. Andy is very responsive and the rehab plans are very flexible, allowing for lots of nuances, and sometimes even me overdoing it a little bit. That is also supported by Andy's wealth of knowledge and experience of sports, and being able to understand his client's/patient's needs as well as the psychology of rehab. Long story short there's nothing short of top notch here.
Thanks Adrian. The offer of regular communication is always there for patients and it really does help with rehab when they take advantage of it, as you have.
Thanks again.
Fantastic experience: I recently purchased a finger splint after damaging my A2 pulley climbing. The splint is so much better than I expected, it limits my range of motion so I feel no pain going about my daily life, it's comfortable and allows me to climb (sensibly). I wish I knew about these 20 years ago!
It’s lovely to hear it’s had such an effect for you Gary. They really do work.
Thankyou for taking the time to write a review. Spread the word!
Fantastic experience: Highly recommend for any sports injuries not just climbing. Very helpful and friendly physiotherapist.
Thanks Klaudia! I hope that’s not just because I said you didn’t have to stop running
Fantastic experience: Andy has helped me recover from a long term knee injury which initially prevented me from climbing, walking, running and cycling. We had one face to face consultation and from the on I was treated remotely. His depth of knowledge inspired confidence and he kept me focused when I doubted that I was making any progress. He was always patient and engaging and gave clear answers to questions. An excellent practitioner with great communication; highly recommended.
Thankyou Chris. Very nice words. You have worked very hard at your rehab and it hasn’t been an easy journey for you.
Fantastic experience: Andy is a really nice person. I was treated professionaly and Andy's suggestions help me in the short and in the long run. His methodology is perfect for non-native english speakers: he resumed all our meeting, and provided me with written details of the treatment. I will not hesitate to come again if needed.
Thanks Martina. I hope you do not need treatment again, but I hope to see you climbing.
Fantastic experience: I had an initial face to face consultation with Andy last Summer and since we have been working remotely but very effectively. I think I am a challenging client given the number of physical issues going on but Andy has given me exercises, encouragement, advice and has been positive about progress. He also listens to sometimes despairing messages and has a positive approach with a quick response.
Thankyou Carol. You have been on a heck of a journey, and it has been great to work with you, and your climbing coach, to arrive at a treatment plan that worked for you.
You have done brilliantly.
Fantastic experience: Easy and quick to be seen by Andy and a very targeted treatment plan involving active healing using weights, hangs and stretches. Andy's advice included everything from new warm up routines to treatment of two specific injuries - the emphasis being on keeping climbing while healing. Have made progress already after 3 days.
Thanks Rob. Very kind of you to leave a review. Much appreciated.
Fantastic experience: Very impressed with Andy, he explained things clearly and created a thorough rehab plan. I would highly recommend, particularly for anyone wanting physio for climbing.
Thanks Sarah, that's very kind of you.
Fantastic experience: I have been seeing Andrew online for 1.5 years. I was looking for a Physio with experience with climbing injuries. Andrew is really knowledgeable, totally trust his advise even over zoom. When he says he will give follow up feedback and support he really does.
Thanks Max. Much appreciated.
Fantastic experience: Andy is very experienced and really knows what he is talking about, he was quick to diagnose my injuries/niggles and suggested effective rehab. He is very responsive via email and great at keeping up to date with you, highly recommend.
Thanks Josh. Very kind of you. Thanks for taking the time to review.
Fantastic experience: Process Physio is exactly what it is. Andy stays with you through the complete rehab process, regularly checking in on your progress and adapting your rehab plan to suit current situation. He's enthusiastic, knowledgeable and responsive. Highly recommended.
Thanks Ali. I hope you're having a great time in Kaly. I'm not jealous at all!
Fantastic experience: Great Service. Andy helped me with a finger related injury, he was very professional and also friendly. It was a personalised service and very in-depth. There was also very good folow up. Hopefully I don't get injured again but if I did I would defiantly use his services again.
Hi Joris, thanks for that. I hope you're going strong with steely fingers!
Fantastic experience: Great session with Andy giving very helpful advice and exercises with excellent follow up communication to check in on progress and offer further support. Thoroughly recommend taking up his services
Thanks Rachel. You were very disciplined and diligent. Maybe i should review my patients???
Fantastic experience: Hugely knowledgeable physio. Knows about climbers and climbing. Works with you and doesn't forget you. Go see he's great.
Very kind words Ian, thanks for the review.
Fantastic experience: Andy treated me via zoom, assessing my injuries and prescribing some exercises. The support that he gave via email over the next few months really helps me keep at it and progress what I was doing. I'm happy to report that both of the injuries I saw him for are completely (touch wood) sorted.
There's no touch wood involved. You did the hard work - but it does show that remote can work surprisingly well. Thanks for the review.
Fantastic experience: I visited Andy for help with a shoulder injury following a couple weeks of significant discomfort. I figured that a physio with climbing experience would be well-placed to help since bouldering is my main hobby alongside freeweights. Andy was very welcoming and following a discussion and a few diagnosis exercises, he was able to explain the issue in a very clear way. Thankfully the injury was not diagnosed as serious, just something that may take some time to heal. I have been undertaking a prescribed physio routine a few times each week, Andy regularly checking in via email to see how things are progressing and tweaking the exercises as necessary. I am please to say that the injury has continued to improve over the weeks and whilst there is still some discomfort, the range of motion and breadth of exercises I have been able to do improves with each day. Highly recommended.
Thanks James. I sent you an email - let me know how you're doing now.
Fantastic experience: Working remotely during the pandemic, Andy managed to fix a very stubborn elbow injury and got me climbing back at full strength again. His approach really worked for me, highly recommend.
Remote physio works! Thanks Sean.
Fantastic experience: Brilliant physio and a lovely gent, expert advice and thorough treatment plans.
Aw you're not so bad yourself Ben. Thanks for the review.
Fantastic experience: I would highly recommend Andy. He is brilliant at helping you to understand the hows and whys of your body, works through things with you, and applies things directly to you and your lifestyle. Andy is realistic and down to earth, and communicates things really well. He goes above and beyond in his service, and ensures regular follow ups and progression which is so much more beneficial than 'one-off' advice.
Not everyone wants to know the whys of what we're doing, but if you do i can talk for hours about it! Thanks Esther.
Fantastic experience: Excellent, experienced physio who fully understands the demands that climbing places on the body and implications of the injuries that can occur. Andy made a detailed assessment and then gave me a series of tailored stretches and strengthening exercises to work on, making sure I had a good grasp of each one, what they were for and that I was performing them correctly. He has then continued keep in touch to gauge my progress and tweak the plan as necessary. I would certainly use him again if I needed to.
Thanks Mike. Hope to see you at the crag rather than on the treatment table.
Fantastic experience: Really knowledgeable and helpful. One of the best physio I’ve been working with. I would highly recommend it.
Thanks Mario. I am soooo jealous of your home wall now. Build up gradually when it's finished!
Fantastic experience: My previous experience of physios has been an assessment/ diagnosis, with a short plan and then never hearing from then again. Andy provides ongoing email correspondence with updated rehab plans as the injury progresses and is happy to clarify any queries. The service is a big step up from any other physio I’ve received. He’s been happy to squeeze me in for a quick video call at times . Ridiculous value for money. Highly recommended and I will definitely use him again (hopefully not for a while though!)
I am officially ridiculous. I kind of like that. I've heard on the grapevine you're on the comeback trail. Take it easy and you know where i am.
Fantastic experience: I was treated by Andy remotely for 2 different climbing related injuries. He was really friendly, great at communicating and I found the whole consultation and treatment process really easy and it really worked. Email support after our Zoom chat was amazing; he checked up on me regularly. I'm happily back climbing and my body feels great. I can't recommend Andy highly enough
That's great to hear Sam. Thanks for your review, especially about how remote Physio can actually work well.
Fantastic experience: Andy took time to fully explain his diagnosis of my finger pain and the logic behind the various exercises he recommended so that I properly understood what they were for. This was helpful to give me confidence in what I was doing. He has been available for regular follow-up advice via email at no extra cost. My injury now definitely seems to be improving, which is a big step forward after over a year of backwards progress before. Thanks Andy!
Kind words Simon, glad to have been able to help.
Fantastic experience: Andy provided a remote consultation with me and was able to correctly diagnose my injury and provide some fantastic recovery exercises that really helped speed up my recovery.
I'm glad to have been able to help. Thanks for the review.
Fantastic experience: Andy is an incredibly helpful Physiotherapist, he listens to you and really tries to understand exactly what is going on in your life that could impact your treatment. I injured my shoulder a few years ago and really struggle with the motivation to keep up with my rehab, Andy helps with this by keeping in touch and encouraging me to keep going! It seems to be working too. I've definitely improved since starting to see him and hope to get back up to full strength in future.
Thanks Holly. You'll get there for sure.
Fantastic experience: Excellent, detailed assessment of my shoulder problem despite being completed via video conferencing.
Thanks Ally. Remote Physio works again!
Fantastic experience: Had a dodgy finger, received guidance on how to rehabilitate said finger, and it's working a treat. Andy has an encouraging attitude and friendly demeanor, would recommend.
Thanks Ross. Rigpa will go this year!
Fantastic experience: A positive and supportive physio experience. Andy does the usual diagnosis, treatment and therapy recommendations, but supplements this well with email contact for follow-ups, tailoring advice as injuries change and progress, and a general supportive and encouraging attitude.
Thanks Matt. Very kind words.
Fantastic experience: Can't recommend Andy highly enough. He quickly diagnosed my injuries and produced detailed and effective rehab plans for me. I saw improvements very rapidly and continue to get better. Brilliant!
Thanks Louise. Keep pushing on, but gently!
Fantastic experience: I have never thought we could stretch the virtual set up this far. Despite Andy and I are not in the same country, his attentiveness during the e-sessions had allowed me to put across my troubles and worries efficiently, his is a very good and patient listener that has given me a lot of reassurance despite we are distance apart. His generosity to follow up in emails post session has allowed me to be on a good path to recovery. This experience has been so good I have booked for a follow up session. Not that I wish ill for my climbing friends, but with the severe lack of expertise in Asia, i will recommend Andy to my friends if they are ever met with the unfortunate incident.
Priscilla you have been a gift to work with. Your enthusiasm for life and for improving the lives of others is infectious. I look forward to hearing about you crushing your projects.
Fantastic experience: Went to see Andy after years of dealing with pain due to climbing related finger injury. He diagnosed very quickly the exact issues, and gave me effective exercises/physio to complete. I'm now climbing better than I have I'm years. If you are a climber and are in pain (which you will be), go to Process Physiotherapy.
Climbing is not kind to us is it? Thanks for the review Gaz.
Fantastic experience: Worked with Andy through a number of injuries and his expert advise and service has been nothing but exceptional. He provides continual support even well after your appointment, which is incredibly reassuring. Especially when the recovery process is long and frustrating! His approach to recovery and integrating it with a hectic lifestyle is simple and logical. I am now working through a training plan that fits in with my busy work/home life and feel really motivated!
Thanks Ben. I try to keep it simple, even when life isn't!
Fantastic experience: Set a perfect plan for my need to rehab my injury which worked great. Kept in touch throughout the process and was very helpful with all questions!
Cheers Gwion. I hope you tear it up this Autumn.
Fantastic experience: A brilliant tailored service supplied with a wealth of information from the outset. I haven't completed my rehab yet but I am already feeling much improved. Can thoroughly recommend.
This feels a bit late Dan, it was nearly a year ago. But thanks!
